Dance Not Quite Pop Just Yet

Text by Nick Lawrence (HigherFrequency)

Although it may seem like electronic music becomes more and more mainstream everyday, the recent announcement of the nominees for the 49th Grammy Awards shows there is still a long way to go yet before dance is the new pop.

All the main categories like ‘Best Record’ and ‘Album Of The Year’ are as usual dominated by RnB, hip hop and soft rock and even the nominations in for ‘Best Dance Recording’ show a very loose definition of the word “dance”. However, Madonna is present thanks to her handy studio man Stuart Price aka Jacques Lu Cont, who as we know from the past is no stranger to winning awards. Glam duo Goldfrapp do make an appearance as well alongside Depeche Mode and the Pet Shop Boys.

The Recording Academy’s thoughts on ‘Best Electronic/Dance Album’ carry on in the same vein with both Goldfrapp and ageing pop-star Madonna rearing their heads once again. Former Grammy winner Paul Oakenfold is back in the running once again as well with his newest album “A Lively Mind”.

Onto category 92 and there is an ever so slightly larger nod towards music you might actually hear in the club rather than on your FM transistor. Amongst remixes of powerful pop princesses Beyonce and Mary J Blige you will yet again find Jacques Lu Cont aka Thin White Duke, this time for another Coldplay remix. Also joining this esteemed group is long-time remix man E-Smoove with his interpretation of Bob Sinclair’s Defected tune ‘World Hold On’ and partners in crime Nic Fanciulli and Andy Chatterley for their Buick Project remix of ‘Damage Thorn’ from Tiefschwarz.

The 49th Grammy Awards will be held on February 11,2007.
