Carl Craig Runs On Empty

Detroit techno star Carl Craig unveiled details of his upcoming new mix CD for Fabric this week and revealed that he tried to record the compilation onsite in total secrecy.

"I wanted to do the mix in an empty Fabric," he revealed, "but that wasn't possible."

Chatting to Skrufff when he passed through London in 2003, the hugely popular techno legend admitted he still found DJing occasionally taxing with annoying fans sometimes upsetting his rhythm.

"I'm a producer more than a DJ so I'm not going to act like I'm the best DJ in the world, like a Carl Cox or Jeff Mills but people don't even know what techno is- that's the reality of the game," said Carl.

"I played last night and some girl stood by the booth all night, asking me to play techno. I had to actually say to her at one point, 'Look, will you quit, I've been playing techno all fucking night, what the fuck do you think this shit is?'" he continued.

"She's like 'Will you play Luke Slater or Dave Clarke or stuff like that?' and I said 'OK, that's techno but that doesn't mean that what I'm playing isn't techno, who why don't you just cool out and take a listen. By you doing this to me, you're annoying me and it's making the experience for the rest of the people foul, because it's making me foul," said Carl.

Fabric's new mix CD is 'a thunderous blend of wide-eyed house and techno decorated with live studio effects and spontaneous, giddy vocals,' according to Fabric's press release, while Carl's description is less specific.

"I wanted to do a hi-tech, hyper mix you could listen to in the car or a caf? or a banging club," he explains on the same release, "I felt I could do something different, especially by adding claps, sounds and my own vocals. A real party mix."
