Sisters Are Doing It For Themselves

We all know about DJ Mag's Top 100 DJ Poll but what about Shejay's Top 100 Female DJs? Well, the votes have been counted and the first ever top 100 female DJs have been voted for. The inaugural winner is DJ Rap the Drum n' Bass DJ/Producer based in Los Angeles. DJ Rap has had commercial success with many of her tracks but perhaps her time as a Calvin Klein model best explains her rise to the top of the pack.
Second place was awarded to better known Lisa Lashes who was the highest ranking female DJ in DJ Mag's 2005 poll coming in at a respectable no. 56. Other notable inclusions on Shejay's list where Miss Kittin (no. 3), DJ Heather (no. 8), Ellen Allien (no. 20), Sister Bliss (no. 31) and Annie Nightingale (no. 86).
Started as a way of gauging awareness of female DJs, the list showed surprising popularity registering over 30,000 votes in less than two months. This is an encouraging sign for the 51% of the population who are currently underrepresented in a male dominated music industry. The poll was run by Shejay, a network that strives to promote a wide range of women working in the dance music business.
