New York Forces Out Its Freaks

Young transvestites and eccentrics are no longer flocking to New York City because of its excessively high prices, legendary cross-dressing icon Lady Bunny complained this week.

"The problem is that freaky people can't afford to live in Manhattan anymore," Bunny told Skrufff.

"If you apply for an apartment and your financial status is such as mine was when I moved here, with no credit card, no savings and no-one to sign for you, you're not going to get a flat, some yuppie will snap it up," she sighed.

As well as DJing and hosting at clubs like the East Village's Pyramid since she arrived in New York in the early 80s, Bunny continues to present her annual cross-dressing parade Wigstock though admitted she's equally unimpressed with the way the drag scene's changed over the years.

"I haven't been too impressed by many of the new girls appearing on the scene, it is disappointing," said Bunny.

"The Pyramid Club in the 80's was such a thriving scene, the drag queens did so much more than lip synch- they were doing theatre, they were fronting rock bands, it was a very artsy, experimental time," she recalled. "The club scene is now so chi-chi and boring, it's all about bottle service." (Jonty Skrufff/Skrufff.com)
