Amsterdam’s ADE Epidemic

Text by Nick Lawrence (HigherFrequency)

For just over a decade the world has been gathering in Amsterdam not for its red light district or its cafes but for one more thing the city is famous for, dance music. The first Amsterdam Dance Event (ADE) was held in 1996 and will this year encompass 30 venues in the Netherlandic capital. The press releases states that there will be 300 acts in attendance and with the first lineup announcement including Paul van Dyk, John Digweed, Ricardo Villalobos, Sven Vath and Krafty Kuts, this is sizing up to meet the promoter’s claim that this is the world’s biggest club festival.

Much like its American equivalent, the Miama WMC, the ADE is not only a grouping of parties throughout the city but also the staging ground for daytime meetings and conferences. One main event is Dutch DJ Day (D3) which opened for the first time in 2004 with a speech from ex-Kraftwerk member Karl Bartos. D3 is a daytime event, unfortunately spoken mainly in Dutch, that aims to help get young DJs and producers off to the right start with workshops, presentations and demo evaluations.

ADE will be in full swing from October 19-21 with D3 taking place during the daytime on the 21st of October.
