Dave Piccioni's Jellyfish Terror

Text by Jonty Skrufff (Skrufff.com)

Azuli Records chief Dave Piccioni chatted to Skrufff this week about his label's brand new compilation series Club Azuli and revealed that when he was stung by jellyfish in Ibiza last summer he'd genuinely feared for his life.

The British house don has been snorkelling hundreds of metres off shore from hippy hangout Beniras Beach when he was stung, leaving him fearful he could drown.

"I have to be honest, I was fucking scared, it was fucking serious shit," Dave admitted.

"I got stung the first time, thought 'that hurts' and decided I'd better turn round and head back to the beach. I looked around then got stung again and thought 'oh fuck, I'm a long way from the shore, it's about a 20 minute swim.' Then as soon as I turned round I got stung again, one tentacle stuck on my stomach and another across my back. I had to cope with about six stings," he recalled.

"I swam back literally chewing on the snorkel because I was in shock," he continued, "I really did have the thought that I wouldn't make it back."

Adding insult to injury the Azuli chief was forced to cancel DJ gigs on the island and a friend's wedding after he suffered an allergic reaction to the stings and was completely incapacitated by an all over body rash, but his misfortune was put into context this week, by the tragic death of a seven year old girl in Australia.

The unnamed girl was stung by the world's most venomous jellyfish, the box jellyfish, while swimming off Umagico Beach on the Cape York Peninsula.

"The pain is horrific. It's like being put into boiling oil," jellyfish expert Lisa-Ann Gershwin, from Surf Lifesaving Australia told the BBC, "She was probably dead within about three minutes. She lost consciousness very, very quickly which was probably a good thing. It reduced her suffering."

Club Azuli- Future Sound of the Dance Underground is out shortly on Azuli (including a` unmixed version for DJs)
