Fifteen Year Long Distress Signal

Text by Nick Lawrence (HigherFrequency)

Fifteen years ago it was still socially acceptable to wear neon clothing and carry various glowing accessories to a "rave". Nowadays things have changed a little and the second you whip out a glowstick you are likely to be pelted with bits of ice and well-chewed chewing gum. One thing hasn't changed though, and that is that the Mayday indoor event is held on April 30th. This year the lineup is as big as ever with the Prodigy, Paul van Dyk, Booka Shade, Superpitcher, Ferry Corsten, Jesper Dahlback and many more performing across three stages at Westfalenhalle in Dortmund, Germany.

The Mayday festival, also known as Word Club, has been promoting world peace and unity through dance music since the first 5,000 ravers entered its doors back in 1991. The next year the event was held in Cologne and saw the crowd size double, and lollipop and whistle sales in the city almost triple. The festival continued throughout the nineties cashing in on the booming rave culture. Despite, reaching the naughties where dance music is a very different creature, the success story that is the Mayday festival still continues.
