Erol Alkan's Trash Aesthetic

Trash promoter/ alternatice icon Erol Alkan chatted to Skrufff this week about his upcoming compilation for Bugged Out and revealed that's he's got typically modest expectations for its commercial success.

"If I sell 5,000 copies of the album I'm not going to be tearful, I've always been about recognising the people that really are there, as opposed to those that aren't," he explained. "It's the same if I walk into a club and there's only 50 people there I'm not going to be heartbroken. Those 50 people demand 100% of my attention, I'll never complain about a club not being full or any of that bullshit. If you can't rock 50 people then how can you expect to rock fifty thousand?"

"Though having said that it's easy to play to twenty thousand fucking people, if I was in a room with twenty thousand people, I'd turn the fucking place upside down- it's a piece of piss (easy- slang ed)," he added. "But that not you doing the work it's because everyone's blown away about being in a room with the atmosphere generated by the large crowd."

His bullish words belied his extremely humble demeanour which seem him become one of the most influential tastemakers on today's post-house, alternative club scene, as well as one of the friendliest.

"I think my focus has come from having a very strict upbringing and being very disciplined in a good way, I've never been impressed by nonsense, those big shiny things that can grab attention," Erol told Skrufff.

"I spent a lot of time as a child on my own, thinking, and I suppose that's made me not be impressed by cheap sensational acts or people's fronts." (Jonty Skrufff/Skrufff.com)
